Luxembourg Fact 1 (June 3–June 9, 2007)
Luxembourg military service is all volunteer. While Luxembourgers are allowed to sign up at age 17, they cannot see combat until they reach 18.
Luxembourg Fact 2 (June 10–June 16, 2007)
Luxembourg joined with the rest of central Europe (minus Switzerland, of course) in 1957 as a founding member of the European Economic Community, which eventually became the European Union in 1993.
Luxembourg Fact 3 (June 17–June 23, 2007)
There are two natural resources in Luxembourg: farmland and iron ore. But the iron isn’t being mined anymore, and less than half a percent of the land has permanent crops. The country seems to be severely under-utilized.
Luxembourg Fact 4 (June 24–June 30, 2007)
I don’t know how I missed this, but Luxembourg is the only Grand Duchy in the world. And furthermore they celebrate the Birthday of Grand Duchess Charlotte on June 23 because the weather is more pleasant than her actual birthday on January 23. The Grand Duchess was Luxembourg’s first constitutional monarch and an important symbol of unity during the German occupation in World War II.
