This week, on July 10th, the Bahamas celebrate their independence from the United Kingdom in 1973.

In addition to the Bahamas major industries of tourism and banking, they also produce rum and spiral-welded steel pipe (sheet metal rolled up, and welded into a pipe, like a paper towel tube).

Bahamians import 72,420 barrels of oil per day, using 34,000 of them, and then shipping out the rest.

Bahamian Fact 5 (July 26–Aug. 1, 2009)

There are 1,223 ships in the Bahamas’ merchant marine.  That’s the sixth largest in the world, and the second largest in the Western Hemisphere, behind Panama.
